中学英語「比較」についてまとめています。比較で学ぶものは、「比較級」と「最上級」が柱となります。それらを理解した上で、そのほかの表現方法を学んでいきましょう。

比較

規則変化、比較級や最上級、原級の作り方、疑問詞を用いた比較、ポイントなどについてふれています。

比較級の要点

I am taller than Yumi. （私は由美より背が高い。）
This book is more interesting than that one. （この本はあの本よりおもしろい。）
Ken swims faster than Bob. （健はボブより速く泳ぎます。）

比較級を用いた比較は、2つ（2人）を比較して「～より～だ」は、比較級+thanの形で表します。

■ 比較級の規則変化

eで終わる単語は、原級＋r
＜子音字+y＞で終わる単語は、yをiに変えてerをつける。（例）easy→easier
＜短母音＋子音字）で終わる単語は、子音字を重ねてerをつける。（例）big→bigger

■ 比較級の不規則変化

good/well – better – best
bad/ill – worse – worst
many/much – more – most
little-less -least

the+比較級+of the two→「2つ（2人）のうちで〜なほう」
My camera is the newer of the two. (私のカメラは2つのうちの新しいほうです。)

比較級を修飾する語句
much(ずっと)、a little(少し)、～years(~歳)などを比較級の前に置く。
Mike is much taller than Jim. (マイクはジムよりずっと背が高い。)

最上級の要点

I am the tallest in my family. （私は家族の中でいちばん背が高い。）
She runs (the) fastest of the three. （彼女は3人の中でいちばん速く走ります。）
He is one of the most famous actors in Japan. （彼は日本で最も有名な俳優の1人です。）
He is the second fastest swimmer in Japan. （彼は日本で2番目に速く泳ぎます。）

＜注意＞
最上級を用いた比較では、3つ[3人]以上を比較して、「～の中でいちばんからだ」は、の形で表します。副詞の最上級にはtheをつけないこともあります。

one of the +最上級+複数名詞…「最も～な～の1つ[1人]」複数名詞を使うことに注意が必要です。
the +序数+最上級…「～番目に～な」

となります。

inとofの使い分け

in+場所や範囲などを表す単数名詞 （例）in my family , in my class , in Japan など
of+数・all・複数名詞 （例）of the three , of all of all seasons など

原級の要点

I am as tall as John. 私はジョンと同じくらいの背の高さです。
Mike cannot swim as well as John.＝John can Swim better than Mike マイクはジョンほどじょうずに泳げません。
This room is three times as large as that one. この部屋はあの部屋の3倍広い。
She has twice as many CDs as I. 彼女は私の2倍の数の CD を持っています。
Run as fast as possible.= Run as fast as you can.できるだけ速く走りなさい。

＜ポイント＞

as ~ as …2つ[2人)を比較して「…と同じくらい〜だ」はの形で表します。
not as [so] ~ as …「…ほど~ではない」となります。
X times as ~ as …「…のX倍~だ」「2倍」は twice[two times」、「半分」は halfを使います。
as 〜 as possible(= as ~ as one can)…「できるだけ~」

【発展】疑問詞で始まる比較の文

Which is larger, China or Canada? 中国とカナダではどちらが大きいですか。
Who can swim (the) fastest of all? 全員の中でだれがいちばん速く泳げますか。
I like summer better than winter. 私は冬より夏のほうが好きです。
I like summer (the) best of all seasons. 私はすべての季節の中で夏がいちばん好きです。
He is taller than any other boy in his class. 彼はクラスのほかのどの少年よりも背が高い。
It is getting colder and colder. ますます寒くなってきています。
She has more than 10 CDs. 彼女は 10枚以上の CD を持っています。

＜ポイント＞

Which（Who）～比較級,A or B?…「AとBではどちらがより~ですか」
Which（Who, What）～最上級+in [of] ～?…「～の中でどれ（だれ,何）がいちばん~ですか」
like～better (than～)…「(～より)～のほうが好きだ」
like〜(the) best…「〜がいちばん好きだ」
比較級+than any other +単数名詞…「ほかのどの…よりも~」
比較級+and+比較級…「ますます〜だんだん〜」
ｍore than〜…「～以上」

【応用】比較の書きかえ表現

富士山は日本でいちばん高い山だ。
Mt. Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan.
=Mt. Fuji is higher than any other mountain in Japan.
=No other mountain in Japan is higher than Mt.Fuji.
=A No other mountain in Japan is as high as Mt. Fuji.
